Kitchen Makeover
In our efforts to continue to bring quality and good service to you our valued guests, we have decided to give our kitchen a complete makeover.

The kitchen was first constructed in 2008 as an attached building to the Main lodge, just three years after our Main Lodge was built. Over the years the kitchen has produced and served some of the best and most loved local cuisines of Suriname, and most recently has included also dishes from neighboring Guyana. We also cater to special dietary needs such as gluten free, lactose free and vegetarian and diabetic meals just to name a few.
Kabalebo Nature Resort
As of May 5th, 2015 we commenced works to break down the old kitchen and replace it with a more spacious and modern one, which will enable us to better cater to your eating needs and preferences in a most hygienic and comfortable environment.

As a result of the reconstruction works, the kitchen was temporarily relocated to one of our free staff quarters until the completion of the new building. The works were scheduled to last throughout the month of May. However, since May is not usually our busiest month due to the expected rainy season, which usually last throughout the months of May and June, our services were not disrupted in any way. The kitchen has now resumed to normalcy as of the ending of June, being equipped with all stainless steel counter tops, tables, racks and drawers, more lights and newly tiled walls and floors, all in coordination, creating a fresh, bright and spacious environment.

We look forward to continuing our service to you and providing you with that experience of a lifetime.

Misty Mountain
Kabalebo Nature Resort
The Misty Mountain is one of our highlights at Nature Resort Kabalebo. It is 500 meters above sea level, and though it doesn't sound like much, it is quite a challenge to climb.

Tours to the mountain begins at about 8:30 hours (local time), with guests being transferred across the Kabalebo river from the Main Lodge via corial to begin their hike. It can take up to 6 hours to complete this tour (3 hours to the top and 3 hours to return). There is a small view of surrounding mountains from the top, then the hike continues to the Charlie Falls where the guests can have lunch and a nice dip in the ice-cold water streaming from the mountain and over huge boulders to create a sauna like experience.

Many wildlife species can be seen during this hike, some almost guaranteed, while others cannot be predicted. The Spider Monkeys are more often seen along this trail than the other trails, but it's also possible to see other types of monkeys, snakes, tapir, many bird species, and with good luck even the jaguar. The hike can be very exhaustive, especially in hot weather conditions, and can be quite slippery during the rainy season, but the feeling of accomplishment is always satisfying once you've reached your destination.

Elderly people as well as young ones have hiked this trail. Our eldest guest to climb the Misty Mountain all the way to the top was just over 80 years old, while the youngest to achieve this goal was merely 7 years old. Make us your next vacation destination and come experience the adventures of the Misty Mountain. The memories will certainly last a lifetime.

A Community Based Initiative: Nature Resort Kabalebo and Stichting Ypsilon Suriname
Kabalebo Nature Resort
As a community based initiative, Kabalebo has liaison with Stichting Ypsilon Suriname, which is a foundation that looks after the interest of clients, families and friends of people with a psychiatric disorder.

Within this project, the clients of the Day therapy center in the Psychiatric Hospital in Suriname (PCS) expresses their creativity through various craft pieces which are then being marketed to tourists by Kabalebo in its Souvenir shop at the resort.

This collaboration began five years ago in the effort to help the clients with their artwork and finding a way for them to earn while being institutionalized. Mrs. Dawson (one of the co-founders of the resort) has voluntarily served as chairman of the foundation for 17 years to present.

Handelmaatschappij Dawson N.V, which is a business, also owned by the Owners of Nature Resort Kabalebo, provides wood for 15 years to the institution, which the clients use to make some of their art pieces. All of the proceeds from the sales go directly back to the Ypsilon. The craft pieces that are available include carvings and paintings of paddles, boats, Macaws and some cultural pieces among others.

You can follow Ypsilon Suriname on Facebook or pay a visit to their Toucan Thrift shop in Paramaribo as well.

The Harpy Eagle
Kabalebo Nature Resort
Kabalebo is home to over 300 bird species, making it a birder's paradise. The Harpy Eagle is one of the spectacular birds that can be seen here from time to time.

It is scientifically known as Harpia harpyja and is often referred to as "ruler of the rainforest", for its dominance of the canopy as an apex predator (top of its food chain). It is among the largest and most powerful eagles in the world. This bird can grow to 36-40 inches. Females are larger than males and can weigh between 13 to 20 lbs (6 to 9 kg). Males weigh between 9 and 11 lbs (4 to 5 kg). Their claws can grow to about 5 inches long.

It is a patient hunter, capable of perching silently for hours in a tree waiting to drop on an unsuspecting prey. It is commonly believed that the Harpy Eagle feed solely on Sloths and monkeys, but they occasionally prey also on other birds like Macaws and Toucans, and reptiles like Iguanas. It is also believed that this bird has a lifespan of about 25 to 35 years.

Though the Harpy Eagle is listed as a rare bird in many regions, it is no stranger to us at Kabalebo. It is being spotted at least twice per month more recently, along the river, which is quite common than expected. It is most recognizable by its distinctive crest.
